Al Pacino Thanks Rappers for Scarface Popularity

Scarface arguably the greatest gangster movie ever (that’s another can of worms altogether), is released onto Blu-ray in the coming weeks. Tony Montana himself, Al Pacino, tips his hat to the Hip-Hop world for the continuing success of the Brian De Palma hit.

Becoming a cult classic in the years after its 1983 release, memorable lines and legendary scenes stick in the mind of viewers. “Say hello to my little friend!” Sound familiar?

At the launch of the Blu-ray version of Scarface, Pacino told MTV News: “The hip-hop people and the rappers got together and they made a video and they talked about the movie. I don’t think anybody’s ever talked about it as articulately and clearly. I understood it better having heard them talk about it.”

The video made by the rappers including Snoop Dogg and P Diddy is entitled, “Scarface: The Origins of a Hip Hop Classic”. The video looks at the film’s impact on the world of Rap and shows the way it influenced the genre.

Pacino continued: “I mean, they really get it and they understand it, and that’s a great thing. They’ve been very supportive all these years. I think they’ve helped us tremendously.”

The heart and soul of Tony Montana is still alive in Pacino today: “Man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s a heaven for? That’s a great expression, and I think that’s Tony Montana.”

For now, Pacino can leave Montana in his heart, as he is set for roles in upcoming films King Lear and Gotti: Three Generations.
